Modern Clown
A movie pitch by Dimario Powell
Story
• A struggling clown performing on the streets of London for money to
pay his debts is robbed by a junkie and attempts to get his hardearned money back, only to be confronted with violence.
Characters
Valtur “Wally” Yuckle
• A balding 47-year-old struggling clown living in London
after migrating from Hungary many years ago. After his
wife died a year prior, Wally works overtime as a street
performer to help support his 4-year-old son, Toby. He
is emotionally distraught behind the façade of his
smiles and is always on the verge of tears.
Jack Vanderbilt
• A 19-year-old spoiled rich kid turned drug addict living
in the crime centre of the city after being kidded out of
his parent’s house for selling their furniture to
purchase heroine.
Visuals
• Paying homage to the films of Jacque Demy, most specifically
Umbrellas of Cherbourg, the film will have a vibrant and colourful
palette to contrast with the dark cynical nature of the content.
Framing will be very reminiscent of Pixar Animated features, most
notably Up with its focused composition a la mise-e- scene. The
colour palette will mostly consist of vibrant blues, reds and yellows.
The first half will be much warmer in colour temperature than the
colder second half.
Sound
• The sound design of the short feature will be very wacky and
cartoony with direct reference to classic cartoons of the 40’s and 50’s.
The music will be a minimal French-inspired score resembling classic
Woody Allen films as well as Jon Brion’s score for Punch drunk Love
and composer Michael Giacchino’s score for Pixar’s Ratatouille. Hints
of jazz will also be present.
Themes
• The short will have the thematic under layer of man vs himself as well
as the loss of innocence. The former will be present in Wally’s self
conflict in wanting to be with his dead son who committed suicide
months prior. The latter will be present in seeing a man-child like
Wally be pushed to violent actions.
