La biographie
• George Bizet was a pianist and
composer of romantic era (XIX).
• He was a prodigy child who entered
Conservatory of Music in Paris at the
age of ten.
• He won a very prestigious
competition called Prix de Rome and
studied in Italy for three years.
• His most celebrated masterpiece is
opera Carmen performed all over
the world.
• The first performance of the opera
was a failure, but soon after Bizet
death, it became one of the top
operas ever written.
Libretto
• Carmen is a story of a gypsy girl who lives
fast and enjoys her life.
• She gets in trouble in her work place –
cigarettes factory - and goes to jail.
• She convinces a soldier named Jose to let her
out. He falls in love with Carmen, lets her out,
but this gets him imprisoned.
• Carmen escapes and Jose soon follows her.
They live together for a while.
• Soon, Carmen gets bored and falls in
love with a toreador Escamillo. She
leaves Jose who still loves her.
• During a bull fight, Jose comes to see
Carmen and begs her to marry him
and change her life.
• Carmen laughs at him saying she is
free and will stay free forever.
• Jose kills Carmen.
