Roaring Twenties: Music

1920s music was called, "a combination of nervousness,
lawlessness, primitive and savage animalism and
lasciviousness.”
• In a time of freedom and expression Jazz
music allowed musicians to improvise and
express themselves without a rigid musical
format.
Louis Armstrong
• Is probably the most famous and influential
musician the United State has ever produced.
• Armstrong played with King Oliver's band at
the beginning of the 1920s, by the end of the
decade he had moved on to a highly successful
career playing around the world with nearly
every famous jazz musician.
• Armstrong, known as "Satchmo" or "Pops", is
the foundation of 1920s jazz. He experimented
with nearly every musical style, including
Hawaiian, gospel, bluegrass, and popular music
of the twenties.
George Gershwin
• George Gershwin was an American
composer and pianist. Gershwin's
compositions spanned both popular and
classical genres, and his most popular
melodies are widely known.
• Among his best known works are the
orchestral compositions
Rhapsody in Blue
(1924) and An
American in
Paris (1928)
Modern Influences…
• Jazz has evolved since its inception and spans
many forms from ragtime to free form.
• Jazz improvisation is a basis on many jam bands
today.
• The music of the twenties defined the era and is a
symbol of rebellion and good times still today.
• Dancing of this era has influenced groups such as
the new boys… and crumping.
• Many artists today continue to pay homage to the
late greats of the roaring twenties.
