Scroll of Fire
Remember !
Martyrs Forest
On the banks of Kisalon River in the Jerusalem corridor, KKL-JNF planted a forest to
commemorate the victims of the Holocaust. The six million trees planted in
1951 are a living monument of eternally green memorial candles for the six
million Jewish people who perished during World War II.
“My words have been made of bronze
and stone, they are
silent, heavy and longstanding.”
Nathan Rapoport
The 8m high bronze monument, which
weighs about twelve tons, was made
by sculptor Nathan Rapoport , a
Holocaust survivor himself .
It is shaped like a double Torah scroll.
The scroll on the right focuses on the
Holocaust ( Shoah ) and its survivors,
while the scroll on the left deals with
the struggle to establish a new
homeland the war for independence, the
establishment of the State of Israel and
the unification of Jerusalem after the
Six Day War.
In the space between the two scrolls, there are two rooms
of memorial, and in each one is engraved a quote from the
Bible.

weapons.
People marching to the concentration camps and the
ghettos.
Janusz Korczak
(1878 -1942)
After spending
many years
working as
director of an
orphanage in
Warsaw, he
refused freedom
and stayed with
his orphans when
the institution was
sent from the
Ghetto to
Treblinka
extermination
camp.
The Warsaw ghetto is seen with its flames and
the defenders of the ghetto fighting the Nazi
enemy, but there are no visible Germans.
The helmets and bayonets symbolize the Nazis.
Faceless.
Their horrible acts wiped off their humanity .
End of the
“ wandering Jew “
After the Holocaust he has left
his stick and sack behind as he
has finally reached his
homeland.
The olive tree ,whose branches are formed from
human bodies, was truncated . However, it
sprouted new branches. So is the renewal for
the nation. Even in the middle of destruction a
new life/nation can be formed.
This scroll ends with holocaust
survivors arriving to Israel in
the pre-state period.
The small boat represents the
thousands who arrived during
the illegal/clandestine
immigration era.
The people from Eretz Israel
are helping them get off the
boats .
Near the boat ,
a man
is kissing the Land of Israel !
In the other scroll , there are some
symbols of the land of Israel :
an orange tree, a boy holding a
cluster of grapes – one of the
seven species mentioned in the
Bible.
( see some more in the next slides )
The pregnant woman
symbolizes the birth of
the next generation that
will be born into freedom
and a homeland.

trumpet
A man blowing a shofar
( ram’s horn) near the Western Wall

The Menorah is being
proudly carried to the
Western Wall , as a
kind of “answer” to the
scene on the Arch of
Titus, where the
Roman soldiers are
taking the menorah
with them to Rome
after the suppression of
the Jewish revolt.
A paratrooper weeps at the
