Holocaust
•The original definition of the word means a
great or complete devastation or destruction,
especially by fire.
•After World War II, the term was used to refer
to the systematic and calculated slaughter of
civilians, especially Jews
Nazi
Power
(1933-1939)
Hitler rises to power in Germany
He promotes ideas of German nationalism
& racial hatred of the Jewish people
He believes that Germany needs
lebensraum (living space) and racial purity.
Jewish Persecution
•Jewish persecution
has been going on
throughout Europe for
many centuries.
•In 1933, the Nazis
made Jewish
persecution a
government policy.
–Laws passed to
discriminate against

–Used “science” to
justify persecution

(1939-1941)
Segregated & overcrowded areas that Jewish people
were herded into.
Became transition areas before being sent to
death/work camps
Dwellers were given ration cards (300 calories/day)
Ghettos were filthy with poor sanitation
Approximately 450,000 people lived in the Warsaw ghetto in early 1941. At this time, the ghetto contained about 840
acres, of which 760 acres were habitable. About 37% of the Greater Warsaw population was squeezed into 4.6% of the
area of the city.

disabled, incurably ill & homosexuals

 In 1942, Nazi death camps built
equipped with gas chambers (6000/day)
and crematoriums
Human Losses
• An estimated 6,000,000 Jews died were
killed during the Holocaust
– 2/3 of the Jewish population in Europe
– Entire families are gone
• Approximately 5,000,000 to 6,000,000
others were killed during the Holocaust
(Gypsies, homosexuals, Polish people,
Russians, mentally retarded, and others)
• At least 50,000,000 people died during
the course of World War II
