Katowice Today
• Katowice is the capital of Silesia.
• It is a quickly developing city, open
for changes and attractive for young
people.
• Our school is situated in one of the
districts of this town – Piotrowice.
Piotrowice
• It is a quiet and nice part of
Katowice, placed quite near the
forest.
• In Piotrowice we have many shops,
a few petrol stations, banks and
a hospital, so there is everything we
need, but there are no factories.
Spodek in Katowice
In Spodek we can watch many
concerts, sports competitions and
fashion shows.Everyone knows
that Spodek is a place where we can
skate all year long.
Spodek means ‘saucer’ in English,
but it is just a sports and concerts
hall which can hold 11,500 people.
In the pictures we can see Spodek at
night and at day time. It’s the most
popular attraction in our city.
The building is beautifully
illuminated at night, so that symbol
of Katowice looks like a spaceship
or a UFO.
This is a multipurpose arena
complex in Katowice. In
Spodek you can go on an icerink, watch a match of
basketball, volleyball or icehockey. There are music
concerts, many parties and
circus performances, too.
A lot of famous people performed
in ‘Spodek’. For example on the
1st of March 2010 we had a
concert of a famous composer
of electronical music JeanMichel Jarre.
Parachute Tower Katowice is a 50 meter
tall lattice parachute tower built in 1937
for training parachute jumps, located in
Kościuszko Park. It was used in the first
days of World War II by 73rd regiment of
infantry as an observation tower. This is
the only one tower located in Poland.
If you already in Kościuszko Park, you
can visit Church of St. Michael
Archangel, which is a little church made
of wood. It was built in 1510 in Syrynia,
but in 1938 it was moved to Katowice.
