Maybe some of the names will
surprise you, because we associate
them with different activities.

Hector Berlioz 1803 –1869
• Hector Berlioz - French
Romantic composer, best
known for his compositions
Symphonie fantastique and
Grande messe des morts
(Requiem).
• In 1850 he became head
librarian at the Paris
Conservatoire

Lewis Carroll 1832 –1898
• Lewis Carroll - The author of
Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland and Through
the Looking Glass.
• Carroll grew up in Cheshire
and Yorkshire, England,
after graduating from
Oxford with a B.A. in
mathematics, he became a
sub-librarian at Christ
Church there.

Giacomo Casanova 1725 – 1798
• Most famous for his
romantic escapades,
Casanova spent the last
thirteen years of his life as
the Count of Waldstein’s
librarian in the Count’s
château at Dux.

Marcel Duchamp 1887 – 1968
• Marcel Duchamp was a
French-American painter,
sculptor and writer whose
work is associated with
Cubism and Dadaism.
• Around 1912, Duchamp
became tired of painting
and worked as a librarian
at the Bibliotheque SainteGenvieve.

Eratosthenes 276 BC – 195 BC
• Eratosthenes of Cyrene
was a Greek
mathematician,
geographer, poet,
astronomer, and music
theorist.
• Eratosthenes was also the
chief librarian of the Great
Library of Alexandria.

Anatole France 1844-1924

• Anatole France - was a
French poet, journalist,
and novelist. He was a
member of the Académie
française, and won the
Nobel Prize for Literature
in recognition of his
literary achievements.
• In 1876 he was appointed
librarian for the French
Senate.

Jacob Grimm 1785 – 1863
• Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm
was a German philologist,
jurist and mythologist. He
is best known as one of
the Brothers Grimm, as the
editor of Grimm's Fairy
Tales.
• Jacob Grimm worked as
a librarian in Kasel, after
graduating with a law
degree.

David Hume 1711-1776
• David Hume - Scottish
historian and philosopher.
• Hume was appointed
librarian for the
Advocates’ Library.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz 1646 – 1716
• Gottfried Wilhelm von
Leibniz was a German
mathematician and
philosopher.
• Leibniz served three
consecutive rulers of the
House of Brunswick as
historian, political adviser,
and most consequentially,
as librarian of the ducal
library.

Adam Mickiewicz 1798-1855
• Adam Mickiewicz was a Polish
national poet, essayist,
translator, publicist and
political writer. A prime
representative of the Polish
Romantic period, he is one of
that country's Three Bards and
the greatest poet in all Polish
literature.
• In 1852 he was given the
position as a librarian in the
Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in
Paris.

Pope Pius XI 1857-1939
• Pope Pius XI – Born
Ambrogio Damiano
Achille Ratti, this future
pope went from being
the chief librarian at the
Milan seminary to
becoming vice prefect of
the Vatican Library.
• He even developed his
own classification system.

• The most celebrated and
obscure novelists and
critics of all time, Marcel
Proust once decided to
go to school to become a
librarian.
• His most famous work,
In Search of Lost Time
