It is impossible to imagine the
history of modern musical theatre
without the name of the British
composer Andrew Lloyd-Webber.
The author of such works as "Jesus
Christ Superstar", “The Phantom of
the Opera", "Cats" and about dozens
of other successful works is actually
called the "king of musical theater“.
Andrew Lloyd-Webber was born in
1948 in London, in a family of
professional musicians. He was first
given a violin at the age of three,
followed by piano lessons and then
lessons on the French horn. As a
child, he preferred playing his own
compositions rather than someone
else`s during his music lessons.
Educated at the private Wetherby
school as a young child, he later
entered school at the prestigious
Westminster Underschool,
eventually earning a scholarship to
attend the Upper School, where he
continued to compose music and
produce local musicals within the
school.
April 21, 1965, Andrew Lloyd
Webber received a letter from
Timothy Rice, a lyricist. Tim offered
to meet and discuss the possibility of
joint work. They started working on
the first joint musical. The musical
was called “The Likes of Us”.
In 1968 he had his first success with
the West End production of 'Joseph
And the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat'.
From the 1960s to 2000s Lloyd
Webber has been constantly
updating
his style as an eclectic blend of
musical genres ranging from
classical to rock, pop, and jazz, and
with inclusion of electro-acoustic
music and choral-like numbers in his
musicals.
His producer credits include Daisy
Pulls It Off, Lend Me a Tenor,
Shirley Valentine, La Bête, the
ground-breaking Bollywood
musical, A R Rahman’s Bombay
Dreams, his smash hit productions
of The Sound of Music and The
Wizard of Oz at the London
Palladium and the films of The
Phantom of the Opera and the
acclaimed Australian production
of Love Never Dies.
Seven Tonys
Three Grammys
Seven Oliviers
A Golden Globe
An Oscar
Two international Emmys
The Praemium Imperiale
The Richard Rodgers award a
BASCA fellowship and the Kennedy
center honor.
With his impressive array of
commercially and artistically
successful shows, Lloyd Webber is
one of the most important composers
for the musical theater in the last
decades of the 20th century. Both his
innate gift for melody and his ability
to create music have contributed
immensely to his worldwide success.
