Andrew Lloyd Webber-The Early
Years
Andrew was born on March 22, 1948 in
Kensington London, England.
 His Parents were both musicians. His mom
was a violinist and pianist, and his father was
a composer.
 It was always his destiny to become a
musician
 In order to prove that he was destined to be
a brilliant musician, he began composing at
age 6 and had his first piece published at age
9.

School Life
Andrew always loved composing and
writing music. When he was in “Prep
School”, he met his long time friend and
lyricist, Tim Rice.
 Tim Rice went on to become extremely
famous writing the lyrics for such musicals
and movies like: Disney’s The Lion King.
 When they were both in 6th grade, the
two of them wrote a very short musical
about the Bible Story of Joseph and his
brothers. They called it: “Joseph and his
Amazing Dreamcoat”

School Life Cont.
This became an instant success that
followed them for the rest of their career.
Because of this, the Queen of England
bestowed upon them a scholarship to
attend the Westminster School at Oxford,
to study history.
 They both abandoned this idea and
moved onto the Royal College of Music
to pursue their musical career.

New Genre
While in college, the two of them ended
up inventing a new genre of Music
Theatre, called a Rock Opera.
 What is a Rock Opera? What do you
think?

Rock Opera
Is an entire musical that is sung, BUT the
music is based on the style of Rock ‘n’
Roll Music.



Since his graduation, he produced 3 main Rock
Opera’s: Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Joseph
and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
These and many more have been huge successes,
because Webber knows what kind of music a
large group of people like, and gives them what
they want.
Webbers main criticism is that all of his music
sounds the same, which is true to a point.
Because of this, he has earned the title of King of
the Trunk Song.
