his life. Beginning in 1873, he was for many years the principal of the School of Fine
Arts. Since 1904 he has a section in the National Museum in Krakow called Dom

Fryderyk Chopin
(1810-1849)
The greatest Polish composer, celebrated world-wide: his works
are performed at concerts and recorded by the most outstanding musicians.
Chopin's creative output is one of the most enduring elements of the world's
musical culture. Chopin was a musical genius, a highly talented composer
and a matchless pianist. As a composer he synthetized bold musical ideas in
the domain of harmony, melody, texture and timbre with the simplicity of
folk motifs and so elevated raised the piano to the status of a major
instrument. His mastery of form, and the melodic and harmonic wealth of
his music became an unattainable model for many composers. Chopin's
creative output established new ways of development for music and has been
a source of inspiration for many succeeding composers.
Chopin’s works
genre by genre:
Ballades (4), Chamber works (3),
Etudes (27), Impromptus (4),
Mazurkas (59), Minor Works (21),

Krzysztof Penderecki
He was born on November 23rd, 1933 in Dębica, he is a Polish composer and
conductor. His 1960 avant-garde Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima for string

acclaim for his choral St. Luke Passion. Both these works exhibit novel compositional
techniques. Since the 1970s Penderecki's style has changed to encompass a postRomantic idiom. He has won prestigious awards including Grammy Awards in 1987
and 1998 and 2001, and the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition in 1992.
As well as the works already mentioned, his compositions include four operas, eight
symphonies and other orchestral pieces, a variety of instrumental concertos, choral
