UNIT 5: COMPOSITION AND
TECHNICAL STUDY
1. Students complete one composition and one
technical study
2. Composition = a 3 minute piece to a set brief
3. Composition briefs = exploiting instruments /
music for film and tv / music, dance and theatre
4. Technical study = Bach Chorale
5. Coursework – controlled conditions (14 hours for
the composition and 3 for the technical study)

1. Listening – to unfamiliar music related to the 2
AOS (Areas of Study). 28 marks
2. Understanding – AOS 3 – Applied Music –
studying 5 extracts and placing them in a
social and historical context. Short note form

3. Understanding – AOS 1 – Instrumental Music –
understanding continuity and change within 7
