BALLET
ABOUT THE COMPOSER AND
THE AUTHOR
PETER ILLYCH TCHIAKOVSKY WROTE THIS
BALLET IN 1891. HE WAS A FAMOUS
COMPOSER WHO WROTE MANY PIECES
FOR ORCHESTRAS.
THE STORY CAME FROM A BOOK CALLED
THE NUTCRACKER AND THE MOUSE
KING.
THE BOOK WAS WRITTEN BY E. HOFFMAN.
The Story
The Nutcracker tells the
story of a young girl
named Clara.
• It is Christmas and she
receives a beautiful
wooden Nutcracker from
her godfather.
• After all the Christmas
festivities are over, Clara
falls asleep with the
Nutcracker in her arms.
THE DREAM BEGINS
• As the clock strikes
midnight, Clara is
awakened by the chimes
of the clock and strange
things begin to happen.
• The toys around the
Christmas tree come to
life as the tree grows high
above her.
• The Nutcracker becomes
life sized and battles with
the Mouse King.
The Nutcracker wins the
battle with a little help
from Clara.
He turns into a handsome
prince and he and Clara
take a journey to a
beautiful winter
wonderland.
They are welcomed by the
Sugar Plum Fairy and are
treated to seven
wonderful dances.

DANCE OF THE MIRLITONS
• What is a Mirliton?
A Mirliton is a tube like
instrument. It is
similar to a flute or a
recorder.
Sometimes this dance is
called The Dance of
the Flutes.
THE WALTZ OF THE FLOWERS
• When all the dancers finish performing for
Clara and the Prince, the Sugar Plum
Fairy and her prince give the final
performance.
• They dance the beautiful Pas de Deux.
PAS DE DEUX
MEANING OF PAS DE DEUX
• The term “pas de deux” comes from the
French language.
Pas means “step”
De means “of”
Deux is the word for “two”
Pas de deux means “step of two” or a
dance for two people.
• At the end of the pas de
deux, Clara and the
Prince leave the
enchanted forest
wonderland. Clara then
awakens from her dream.
• She finds herself by the
Christmas tree in her
home. Everything is back
to normal.
• The Nutcracker is by her
side.
