Mission Statement –
Towards a Smokefree Canterbury
Aims:
•
To advocate for effective Smokefree strategies both locally and nationally
•
To be a leading voice for Smokefree issues in Canterbury
•
To collaborate, share information and co-ordinate activities of member groups
•
To develop and implement Smokefree projects
•
To uphold the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and address inequalities
Strategies:
•
To identify opportunities to develop Smokefree initiatives in Canterbury
•
To take action on local Smokefree issues
•
To develop and co-ordinate Smokefree projects, as appropriate
•
To provide local support for national initiatives and national organisations
•
To strengthen and develop the Smokefree network in Canterbury
Hornby Smokefree Project promoting smokefree lifestyles
• Community development model – building community
capacity within existing infrastructure
• Collaboration – oversight, Steering Group, funding and
support
• Hornby – geographical boundaries, demographic mix,
large numbers of children and young people, Maori focus
• SF Health Promoter based in community at Heartlands.

and deliver SF message
• Supporting students work within schools
promoting positive attitudes to SF lifestyle
denormalising smoking in youth.

• Baseline survey for 2 year evaluation

• Relationship building – takes time!
• Kyle and Wycola parks – to be smokefree,
pilot for city-wide initiative
• Schools actively involved – Hornby High &
Branston Intermediate.
• Other service providers (eg
Plunket,Budgeting services) now
delivering SF message
• Basis for evaluation in place
Future Vision

to deliver smokefree messages
• Smokefree parks and playgrounds –
promoted by parents and children
• Workplaces supporting smokers to quit
• Smokefree homes and cars
