will continue to create a need for child care

Changes in Families
• A dramatic change has taken place in the early
experiences of preschool children during the
past 30 years
• What do you believe is the biggest change in
families??
Shift in Family Trends
• Women are becoming more highly educated
• Married couples are having fewer children
• More young adults are getting married later in
life. When they have children later, they are in
a better position financially to afford early
childhood programs
• Smaller family size means families have more
money to divide. This means what????
• Women are demonstrating increasing
commitment to their careers. They work during
pregnancy and return to work
after birth
• Families see the value of having children attend
an early childhood program. ¾ of young
children participate in a preschool program
• In the next decade, the under-five population
is expected to rise modestly.
• What does this mean for you ????

Educational Studies
• Studies have confirmed the benefits of highquality early education.
• The first five years of life are a critical period in
development
• Children who are involved in early learning
experiences are more successful in school and
are less likely to have behavior problems
• One study surveyed the progress of children
who attended a high-quality preschool
program
– Over the years, these students fared better than
those who did not participate in early childhood
education
– They earned better grades
– More graduated from HS
– Enjoyed higher earners
– Made less use of welfare
Benefits to the Economy
• Quality early childhood programs do not only
affect tomorrow’s citizens
• Studies show that preschool education is a
sound economic investment
– Across the nation, states have caught on to the
importance of offering early childhood care for all
young children
• Never have there been more opportunities in
Early Childhood. Early childhood programs
occur in a variety of settings. Private schools,
public schools, homes, apartment buildings,
businesses, parks and houses of worship just
to name a few!
• Due to demand, the challenge of maintaining
a qualified early childhood workforce will row
more difficult.
• Workers over 45 years of age will need to be
replaced as they retire…this is where you
come in!
• Complete worksheet-Careers in Early
Childhood
• Create a information cube outlining the Career
Opportunities in Early Childhood.
• Use pages 18-20 to create your cube which
will include text AND pictures.
