GROUPS
Formal: the structure, goals, and activities of
the group are clearly defined
Informal: there is no official structure or
established rules of conduct
Primary: small group of people who interact
over a long period of time on a direct and
personal basis.
Secondary: a group in which interaction is
impersonal and temporary in nature
Reference: any group with whom individuals
identify and whose attitudes and values they
adopt
In-group: the group that a person belongs to
and identifies with
Out-group: any group that the person does
not belong to or identify with
E-Community-people one interacts with on
the internet (done online not face to face)
Social Networks-the web of relationships that
is formed by the sum total of a person’s
interactions with other people
Internet or “Real” world
Define boundaries
Set goals
Make decisions
Select leaders
Assign tasks
Control member’s behaviors
Leaders-people who influence the attitudes
and opinions of others. 2 Categories of
leaders, groups need both to be successful.
Instrumental leaders: task-oriented, find
specific means that will help a group reach its
goals.
Expressive leaders: emotion-oriented, find
ways to keep the group together and to
maintain morale
Identify your in-group.
Create a diagram of your in-group’s functions
using the web diagram (or any other visual
that depicts your in-group and it’s functions).
Include the types of leaders within your ingroup (identify who are they)
In a sentence or two describe social norms
within your in-group and how those norms
are enforced
Breaking a Folkway: Assignment is due next
Wednesday Sept. 14th. We will spend part of
class sharing out what we did and the results.
