Social Change
Why it does and doesn’t happen
“Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the
world, indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.”
Margaret Mead
Why does social change happen?
Some societies change more than others
For example:
Some monarchies enjoy much reverence from the population while other
monarchies have lost support

What needs to happen for change to occur?
Leadership
A leader needs to have charisma for
change to occur
What is charisma?
Charisma – describes a leader who has a
large vision, magnetic style, strong popular
support and aspects of extraordinary,
superhuman, and supernatural character
Charismatic Leaders
Elites
 People can also have an influence on change
 Elites create social change and influence its
direction
 Social change usually happens when elites as
well as leaders get together to create change
People want Change
 There can be a vary charismatic leader and change
won’t happen because people don’t want change
 The public has to be in the mood for change
 The environment influences a persons need for
change – Example: liberal surrounding = liberal
attitudes
 Do the values we have early in life stay with us for
the rest of our live?
Impediments to Change
Traditional Cultural Values
Although a society may want to modernize
there would be individuals in society who
would want to keep it the same because
the traditional way is better for them
Example: Malaysian rice farmers
Expense
Change can be expensive
If the government wants to establish more
social programs it is the citizenry who will
pay for the changes
People may not be willing to pay for the
programs because they do not want them
What social programs should Canadians
support?
Change Quotes
 “If you don't like something, change it. If you can't
change it, change your attitude. Don't complain.” ~ Maya
Angelou
 “Any change, even a change for the better, is always
accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts.” ~ Arnold
Bennett
 “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” ~
Mahatma Gandhi
 “If you would attain to what you are not yet, you must
always be displeased by what you are. For where you
are pleased with yourself there you have

advancing.” ~ Saint Augustine
