Being Resilient
FOS
Mr. Christman
Objectives
1) Define what it means to be resilient
2) Develop strategies to promote resiliency
throughout life
3) Examine methods for developing
protective factors.
What is Resiliency?
Resiliency is the ability to adapt effectively
and recover from disappointment, difficulty,
or crisis.
Everyone goes through times of stress,
disappointment, and difficulty. Resilient
people handle these problems in healthful
ways and achieve long term success in
spite of negative circumstances.
Factors that Affect Resiliency
Many factors can influence a person’s level
of resiliency. These factors can be divided
into two categories: external and internal.
Factors that Affect Resiliency
External Factors:
These factors include your family, school,
community, and peers. They may also
include elements that are less concrete,
such as opportunities to participate in
school groups or community events. You
have little control over external factors.
Factors that Affect Resiliency
An example of an external factor that work
towards resiliency:
Joining a school group with your friends that
work with community programs to access
more opportunities and make more
friends.
Factors that Affect Resiliency
Internal Factors:
Your attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors
make up your internal factors. You have
total control over these factors. Making a
conscious effort to strengthen these
factors will increase your resiliency and
emotional/mental health.
Factors that Affect Resiliency
Four important internal factors are:
1) Commitment to learning:
Being actively involved in your education
increases your self-esteem and gives
you a sense of belonging in the school
community.
Factors that Affect Resiliency
2) Positive values:
You demonstrate positive values through
your words and actions. For example, by
helping a friend study for a difficult test,
you show that you are a caring person.
By understanding the impact of high-risk
behaviors and avoiding those behaviors,
show that you value your personal health.
Factors that Affect Resiliency
3) Social competency:
Being social competent means that you
have empathy and friendship skills. It also
means that you can resist negative peer
pressure and resolve conflicts
nonviolently.
Factors that Affect Resiliency
4) Positive identity:
Having a positive identity shows that you
have high self-esteem and also have a
positive view of your future.
Resiliency and Your Protective Factors
In addition to strengthening your resiliency,
your protective factors protect you from
risk behaviors such as drug use.
Protective Factors: conditions that shield
individuals from the negative
consequences of risk behaviors.
Resiliency and Your Protective Factors
Some protective factors include:
-standing up for your beliefs
-being honest with yourself and others
-resisting negative peer pressure
-developing a sense of purpose
-developing a positive outlook about your
future
Being Resilient

factors (values). In a paragraph, write
about certain areas in your life that you
are proud of and certain areas that you
would like to strengthen.
