TOPIC 1: CELL BIOLOGY
1.2 Ultrastructure of Cells
• What do you know?
• What questions do you have?
Read & Consider
1 – INVENTION
1.2.3
Light Microscope vs. Scanning Electron Microscope
Resolution:
• Light Microscope – 0.2µm
• SEM – 0.1nm
The world that we inhabit is limited
by the world that we see. Is there a
distinction to be drawn between
knowledge claims dependent upon
observations made by sense
perception and knowledge claims
dependent upon observations
assisted by technology?
• What do you know?
• What questions do you have?
• What does “prokaryote” mean?
2 - PROKARYOTES
Read & Consider:
1.2.1
Draw, Label, and Annotate  Prokaryote
 Cell wall
 Plasma membrane
 Nucleoid
 70S ribosomes
 Pili
 Flagella
Binary Fission  Prokaryotic chromosome is
replicated.
 Copies of the DNA attach to
adjacent ends of the cell.
 Membrane grows to separate
copies.
 Bacteria grows to twice its size
then the membrane grows inward.
Parent & daughter
cells are identical.

What
do you know?
questions do you have?
does “eukaryote” mean?
are two categories when discussing eukaryotes?
3 - EUKARYOTE
Read & Consider:
1.2.2
Draw, Label, and Annotate Eukaryote
(animal & plant)
Plasma membrane, cytoplasm, 80S ribosomes,
nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi
apparatus, cell wall, chloroplasts, central vacuole,
lysosomes, and vesicles.
Structure  Function
 Exocrine Gland Cells of
the Pancreas
 Palisade mesophyll
plant cell
1. Using iPads – research the specific function of
each of these cells.
2. Study the electron micrographs of each on pages
14-15.
3. How does the density and location of each
organelle assist the cell in its specific job?
4. Practice identifying organelles using only an
electron micrograph.
Compare, with the aid of a diagram, the structure of
generalized prokaryotic and eukaryotic animal cells.
(Total 8 marks)
Marks must be awarded if comparisons
are made as either annotations to the
diagram or in narrative or table form.
DESIGN A LAB TO TEST A FACTOR
AFFECTING BACTERIAL REPRODUCTION.
