The “M” phase of the cell
cycle. Is it Mitosis or Meiosis?
Cell Division
2 kinds for 2 different types of
cells in living things.
What kind of cells?
• Mitosis
• Meiosis (SEX)
• Found in asexual Somatic
cells (body cells)
• plant and animal tissue
such as non-flowering
plants and body tissues
like toes, nose, ear,
stomach etc…
• Found in sexual cells
called Gametes (sperm
and egg)
• Plant and animal tissues
such as flowers, pine
cones, and body parts
related to sexual
reproduction.
Terms related to Mitosis and
Meiosis

Mitosis
Asexual
Somatic
Identical daughter cells
Binary Fission (bacteria)
Conjugation (Protists like
amoebas and parameciums)

Meiosis
Sexual
Gametes (sperm, eggs)
Polar bodies – nonfunctioning
eggs
• Diploid (2N) where “N”
represents the chromosome
number
• Haploid (N) sex chromosomes
½ the chromosomes number
given from Mom or Dad
Homologous chromosomes –
same size and same shape or
structure
Crossing over of genes in the
chromosomes
Crossing over of Homologous
Chromosomes
Compare Mitosis and Meiosis
• Both cell divisions go through the cell
cycle
• Both cell divisions undergo Prophase,
Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase and
Interphase
• Both Mitosis and Meiosis are considered
the “M” phase of the cell cycle
Contrast Mitosis and Meiosis
• Mitosis
• Found only in somatic
cells
• Goes though cell
division 1 time
• Daughter cells have
identical DNA
• Meiosis
• Found only in sex
cells
• Goes through cell
division 2 times
• Final product are 4
sperms or for females
1 egg, 3 polar bodies
