The Magical world of…
Protists
Most are Unicellular
Have to use a microscope to see
them…….

Protist Basics!
Eukaryotes
Nucleus
Mitochondria
Cell Membrane
Ribosome
Vacuole
Sometimes….. Organelles
Cell Wall
Chloroplast
Flagella
Cilia
We’ve all got to
breathe and eat!!!
Protists can absorb their
food and oxygen right
through their cell membrane
Pseudopodia
• Means “false foot”
• Part of the Protist’s body extends or
reaches out to help it move or catch food.
• Example: Amoeba
Some Protists have chloroplasts
like a plant and make their own
food like the Euglena
Euglena
Eyespot
• Euglena have eyespots which allow them
to sense light
• Allows organism to “see” food or
predators
Cilia
• Small Hairs used for movement or in
feeding
We’ve all got to eat!!!
And…expel…
Oral Groove and
Anal Pore
Food goes in Oral
Groove, digested by a
vacuole, leaves through
anal pore.
Contractile Vacuole
• An organelle that helps the cell maintain
water balance.
Protists often reproduce by
Binary fission
This is when they divide in
two
Gettin’ Jiggy with it!!! Nah Nah Nah Nah
Phototaxis
Movement towards the light
Ex. Euglena move towards the light
to do photosynthesis
Gettin’ Jiggy with it!!! Nah Nah Nah Nah
Chemotaxis
Moving towards or away from a
chemical
Examples:
Moving away from a dangerous
chemical
Moving towards food
Now isn’t all that
just CRAZY!?!?!?!
