Transcript Forms of Asexual Reproduction

Asexual reproduction only needs _____ parent!!!!
Binary Fission
One cell becomes two. In Prokaryotic organisms, such as bacteria its how they
Reproduce !!! There entire bodies are only the size of one cell. If we could
reproduce this way, Mr. Sergent could simply split and make two Mr. Sergent’s.
Would that not be great!!!!
Binary Fission is fast!!!!
Bacteria cells undergo binary fission! In a single night
one can become billions.

Our bodies undergo Binary Fission
as well.
 The Eukaryotic cells in our body ,SOMATIC cells
divide through Mitosis which is a form of “BINARY
FISSION”

 1. Which divides faster, bacteria cells or our cells?
 2. What are two advantages of being able to reproduce
like a bacteria cell?
 3. What are some disadvantages of being able to
reproduce like a bacteria?
“Regeneration”
 Allows organisms to grow back body parts! Some
organisms like planarians that are cut into sections will
grow back into two organisms.

Asexual reproduction
 vegetative propagation
 3 methods of vegetative propagtaion
-tubers
-bulbs
-runners
Tubers
Tubers are underground food stores
which stores food over the winter and
provides a new plant with food until it
can make its own.
Examples: potato, artichoke, yam,
cassava, water chestnut, arrowroot
TaroJapanese
potato
Food made by the new plant is sent to
make new tubers. Thereby reproducing
itself.
Bulbs
 E.g. daffodils, lilies
Runners
Runners are side shoots which grow
out from the parent plant.
Buds form at points along the runner
and eventually these buds form roots
and grow into new plants.
Examples: spider plant
(Anthericum), strawberry
(Fragaria x ananassa)
Cutting
Cuttings are small pieces of stem with some
leaves attached, the new plant grows from this.
They can be placed in moist
soil or water (and sometimes
dipped in rooting
powder).
Grafting
A cut stem of one plant (with good flower or
fruit growth) (the graft) is taken and firmly
attached to the rootstock of another plant
(which has a strong, established root system)
(the stock).
Examples- roses, fruit trees
I can “Learning Check”
What are three ways that a plant can go through vegetative propagation?
What are two ways that a plant can go through artificial vegetative propagation?
Budding
When an organism reproduces
by growing an identical copy on
the outside of its body.

Parthenogenesis
The development of
eggs that have not
been fertilized.

 What are the advantages of budding?
 What are the advantages of parthogenesis?
 What organisms may undergo budding?
 What organisms may undergo parthogensis?
