Walk of Friendship
in Harehills
28th April 2012
Jamia Masjid Bilal, Harehills
Mohammed Shafiq welcomes us to the mosque
Inside the mosque we find fine marble walls and pillars and an
enormous carpet, with space for thousands of worshippers
Mohammed Shafiq tells us about Islam and the story of this
mosque and the community that worships here
An explanatory tour of the mosque includes the display
showing the times of daily prayer
the room where bodies are prepared for burial
and facilities for wudu - washing before prayer
We leave the mosque to cross the road to the community centre
Tables are ready set out with refreshments
The hospitality was very generous ...
... and tasty, too!
We were reluctant to move on, but very grateful to our gracious and
interesting Muslim hosts.
A short walk through the back streets of Harehills, following the
rainbow banners ...
... took us downhill ...
... to St Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church ...
... where we were greeted by the Lord Mayor of Leeds,
Councillor the Revd Alan Taylor
Inside St Augustine’s
We took in the atmosphere
and heard about the church and about Catholic worship
from John and Claire McLaughlin
Altar of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Easter garden
The Lord Mayor led
the walk on
Harehills Lane ...
... and down via Banstead Park ...
... to St Aidan’s Church (Church of England)
St Aidan’s Church is a
massive Victorian
church ...
... in the High Anglican tradition ...
... with many wonderful architectural features
The Lord Mayor is the Vicar here
He spoke briefly about the church
The Revd Diana Zanker, assistant priest, spoke about the work of
St Aidan’s Church with refugees and asylum seekers
Barrie Pepper gave a talk on the most notable features of the
building ...
... and particularly its famous mosaic panels designed by Frank
Brangwyn ...
... telling the story of St Aidan.
