EYE DONATION

TOPS
Reasons for poor eye donation in
India
• Unawareness regarding eye donation
• Religious misconceptions
• Existing laws – only doctors (MBBS) can
perform the procedure
SOURCE OF DONOR EYES
• Consented donor eyes
• Pledged eyes
• Eyes from unclaimed bodies
PLEDGING
• Eye donation can
happen irrespective of
whether a person has
pledged his/her eyes
or not
• Pledging is for creating
awareness and it acts
as a reminder to do this
job.
OCULAR TISSUE RETREIVAL
Nobody is charged
for making eye
donation. The only
cost to encounter is
one local telephone
call.
Enucleation to be performed
• Within 24 hrs of death if body is refrigerated
• Within 6 hrs of death if body is not
refrigerated
Till corneal retreviation team arrives-- Place wet cotton with ice
over the closed eye lids. It
will keep the tissue moist.
 Raise Head with a pillow.
 Switch off the fans
 If possible, antibiotic eye
drops may be periodically
instilled in the eyes in
order to reduce chances
of infection
PROCEDURE
 Consent form - should be completely
and correctly filled
 Eye jar and blood test tubes should be
labelled with-
 Eye ( laterality)
 Time & date of death
 Time & date of enucleation
 Cause of death
 Name of enucleator
10-30 cc blood for serological testing
Subclavian artery or vein is the preferred site
Femoral Artery or vein as last resort
• HIV
• HBsAg
• HCV
Tissues are examined, processed and used for
corneal transplant operation as early as
possible.
The needy patients are contacted in
accordance with the waiting list.
Eyes are a precious gift to a
person. But the same eyes
bring misery when misused or
when they are lost. A wise man
utilizes that gift while alive
and on death too
Let the others see the
rainbow through your eyes,
pledge & donate your eyes
BRING LIGHT INTO SOMEONE’S
DARK LIFE!
LET THEM SMILE THROUGH YOUR
EYES
Thank you
