Prof Alio, one of the international figures of European Ophthalmology, has
devoted his life to academic education, clinical work, research and innovation. His extensive
CV includes a postgraduate medical training in the United States, England and Germany.
He became Senior Professor of Ophthalmology in the University of Alicante 22
years ago, and developed an extensive academic career and directed 55 doctoral thesis,
ocular surgery, inflammation, cataract, and refractive surgery.
He has 36 patents and original designs. He has been author or co-editor of 60
books, and 180 book chapters… has pronounced 436 conferences, participated in 200 round
tables, and provided 1,323 presentations in 410 scientific congresses . He has published 550
articles of which 320 are indexed in index medicus. His scientific publications have deserved
2,472 quotations in the peer review literature, with a Hirch index of 26.
Prof. Alio is Section Editor of the British and the European Journal of
Ophthalmology, and Chairman of the European Asia Pacific edition of Ocular Surgery
News …member of the Executive Board of several Societies (Eur Soc Refr Surg; Intl Soc
Cat Refr Surg, Intl Ocul Inflam Soc), and Board Member in 10 scientific journals (BritJ
Ophthalm; Eur J Ophthalmol, Ophthalmic Research; J. Cat Refr Surg, J Refr Surg).
Honorary Professor of many Universities (Havanna –Cuba-, Louisiana State
University, Masachusssetts Eye and Ear and University of Cleveland, Seville). He achieved
full professorship at Louisiana State University in 1999. He has 31 awards for clinical
research.
As a service to the community, Dr Alio has founded a Foundation which develops programs
to support visual handicaps and prevention of blindness, and supports the contest
“Miradas of Hispanoamerica”. He is also president of the Rotarian club in Spain.
