Outline
Origins of NMEA
Noted FIRSTs in History of NMEA
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Why History?
History is a pack of lies about events that
never happened told by people who
weren’t there
George Santayana
We want to live in the present. The only
history worth a tinker’s damn is history
we make today
Henry Ford
History is more or less bunk
Henry Ford
Why History?
You don’t hate history, you hate it as it
was taught to you in high school
Stephen Ambrose
Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a
mystery. Today is a gift. That is why we
call it the present.
Babutunde Olatunji
People without knowledge of their
past, origin and culture is like
a tree without roots. Marcus Garvey
Why History?
Those who do not learn from history
are doomed to repeat it
George Santayana
History is a guide to navigation in
perilous times. History is who we
are and why we are the way we are
David McCullough

Beth Jewell
We “Fish” wish to support our kindred piscatorial as an
NMEA icon. Two votes to “Save the Pike” Mr/Mrs Fish
A sacrifice of Pike to Pele would be awesome. We are
NMEA Marine Educators and our mascot is a fresh water
fish? … Andrew Wilson
THE PIKE The Debate
Perhaps Pike should take a sabbatical. Once he gets to
Maui, it is possible a life of leisure and rum might appeal
to him…..After five or six years, he might mysteriously
reappear in a casino in Atlantic City Neil Gilbert
I have mixed feelings..I remember the good old days
when I was a kid, he was distinguished…His entrance,
like that of a president and was the highlight of every
conference…Recently, his entrances seemed contrived,
even forced and a little……….boring, kind of like, well,
Neil Diamond.
