DISSERTATION PROPOSAL
AARON IRWIN
MY IDEA
Social Media In Sport
POSSIBLE TITLE
An investigation into how social media has affected
sports journalism and the way it has been reported
since 2010.
AIMS
To explore how the social media revolution has impacted sports and sports journalism.
To understand why the changes are positive/negative.
To argue how social media has given the world better coverage of sports and sports journalism.
To argue how Twitter is becoming the number one platform for sports journalists.
PHIL MCNULTY
“I don’t think there is any turning back now. Twitter is here as an
important tool reporting live in matches.”
QUESTIONS
is Twitter the future for reporting games?
Will TV suffer at the hands of social media?
Should Journalists try to build a brand via Twitter instead of
trying to break through into broadcast media?
CHAPTER IDEAS
Club Propaganda – How sports teams/clubs have their own media/social media teams that send out press
releases and information.
However the information they put out, is sent from the club and doctored to make the information sound
positive at all times.
Therefore the information can be seen as propaganda.
POSSIBLE SOURCE: Scott McLeod, Everton FC.
CHAPTER IDEAS
How social media has evolved since 2010.
Looking at trending topics and how many interactions were conducted during 2010 and 2014 World Cup Finals,
for example.
Print no longer the first place to find out information about a team. (Green Paper)
CHAPTER IDEAS
Over-sensationalization of certain days on sporting calendar thanks to social media.
For example Deadline Day on Sky Sports News.
Social Media has changed the way transfers are reported, with news breaking first on Twitter.
CHAPTER IDEAS
At Your Fingertips – Sport is easily accessible now.
BBC Sport and Sky Sports News amongst others have dedicated apps for iOS and Android.
Score alerts when out and about. Much easier to follow.
Final Score and Soccer Saturday becoming obsolete?
CHAPTER IDEAS
The Rise Of The Bloggers – Blogging has become huge.
It’s the same in most sports, many bloggers have jobs at big sites because of their work on their blogs.
A few friends who blog football as possible sources.
Youtuber Revolution
PRINT MEDIA
As with all journalism, print is being left behind.
Newspapers are there to confirm facts and analyse the goings on and matches
instead of breaking the news.
POSSIBLE SOURCES?
Prominent people in both sport and social media. Gary Lineker for example.
Editors at BBC Sport, SSN etc. Ask whether they’ve seen a huge change in the way sport is reported due to
social media.
Social Media experts, ask about whether sports events get the most traffic and when peak times are for reporting
on it via Twitter, Facebook etc.
RESEARCH
Some has been done already.
Initial delve found material from Forbes, Telegraph etc.
Need to scan Journals and see if any dissertations on the topic have been done before.
