Feedback on Section 2 Essays
• Be more specific in your conclusions than simple „to a
certain extent“
• Think about your criteria for measuring success. E.g.
the industrial revolution under Stalin might have been
successful in increasing industrial output, but
devastating in terms of human cost and unsuccessful in
terms of improving living standards for the Russian
people.
• PLAN your thoughts before you write – it makes for a
much clearer essay!
• Be specific about the actually policies or reforms your
are referring to and their consequences/Affect. Don’t
be too vague and reform to „Khrushchev’s economic
reforms“ for everything.
Reminders about Khrushchev
• Destalinisation was not in itself an economic
policy, but of course it did shape Khrushchev’s
economic plans
• Why were his reforms not more successful?
– Cold War pressures,
– lack of fundamental support from the Politburo,
– his increasingly erratic decision making.
Destalinisation
the policy, pursued in most Communist areas
and among most Communist groups after 1956,
of eradicating the memory or influence of Stalin
and Stalinism, as by alteration of governmental
policies or the elimination of monuments, place
names, etc., named for Stalin.
