DISCUSS
We know that:
Germany and Italy are not in good shape
The Treaty of Versailles really screwed them
Dictatorship is on the Rise mainly because
they appeal to the publics wants
They ensure dominance through oppression
We’re going to talk about another Dictator;
the most important one of the second world
war
& Nazi expansion during the 1930s
Hitler was an extremely popular
leader
While the rest of the world was going
through the great depression, Hitler
offered his people good jobs
(building weapons and Highways), a
strong economy, social programs
(like free vacations), ethnic price and
a national purpose.
Hitler specifically targets children
and brings Nazism to schools and
creates mandatory after school
programs
Even Germans who felt
uncomfortable with all the
militarism, propaganda, rallies and
racial hatred (towards Jews and
others) supported Hitler because life
was better with him in power
HITLER WASN’T A GENIUS! The truth is that
Germany was heading towards economic
disaster. Don't ever listen to people who say
otherwise!
The WAVE?
What do you think of this picture?
GERMAN SYMBOLS…WHAT DO THEY MEAN?
Originally the Reichsadler
“Imperial/National Eagle”
Roman Eagle Standard
Symbol of Power
Changed to the Reichsadler
“Federal/Imperial Eagle”
Originally a symbol
Used by ancient civilisations
(Iran, China, Korea, Europe)
The Vedic of Goodness of wealth
And prosperity
WHAT ELSE DOES HITLER DO ENSURE HIS REIGN IN GERMANY?
HOW DOES HE PROMOTE IT?
Why is propaganda important? Well…
1)
2)
3)
4)
It
It
It
It
masks the truth (ex: Cake)
spreads the word
is effective
sticks
Propaganda is usually:
1)
2)
3)

Repetitious
Simple
Image based
Sentimental
Some people believe that advertising is a form
of propaganda as it aims to persuade people
to buy a certain product to make them feel a
certain way. Propaganda is communication for
the purpose of persuasion so they are linked
in some way
But we will talk about political prop
Fear (safety of their jobs, their children, the fate
of their country, stereotypes)
Charisma
Most importantly: He appealed to the interests
and problems of the German people

How else does he ensure power?
What would you do?
#2 YOUTH PROGRAMS
Signal obedience and glorify German nation
What do you think is going on in this picture?
You’re completely right
WHY DID HE WANT TO INFLUENCE GERMANY’S YOUTH?
HOW ABOUT THIS ONE?
IN POWER, WHAT NOW?
TO ENSURE POWER HE NEEDS TO…
According to the Treaty of
Versailles, Germany was to
have a tiny army (100,000
men), no navy & no air
force
Hitler immediately broke
the treaty by spending
millions on weapons
production and
development
He warship and aircraft
production was kept top
secret
He created an army of
“workers” that were trained
like soldiers
SO HE’S GOT AN ARMY… WHAT DO YOU
THINK HE DOES?
A) SET DEFENSES, LOCKS GERMANY DOWN
B) DECIDES HES DONE RULING A COUNTRY
AND GOES BACK TO VIENNA TO PAINT
C) INVADES THE RHINELAND?
The Rhineland is the German
border with France
As part of the Treaty of
Versailles the Germany Army
could not enter this area
The Saar Region was occupied
by the French as part of the
treaty
Hitler moved the German army
into the Rhineland and the
Saar Region in 1935
France did nothing
The German people were very
excited and Hitler gained
further support
Called the “ANSCHLUSS”
or Union
Taking advantage of a
weak Austrian
government and a poor
and humiliated Austrian
people, Germany invades
Austria and takes the
country without firing a
shot
Austria became part of
Germany and Austrians
were expected to call
themselves Germans
In 1938, Hitler claims that German speaking people
in the Sudetenland (part of Czechoslovakia) were
being mistreated
Hitler threatens to invade to save these people
An international conference is called
Only France, Britain, Italy and Germany are invited
Britain and France decide to persuade Czechoslovakia
into giving Germany the Sudetenland in exchange for
a promise of peace
This was known as “Appeasement” or “giving in to the
demands of others”
Hitler breaks his promise immediately and invades
the rest of Czechoslovakia
PEACE IN OUR TIME!
Hitler wanted access to
East Prussia (part of
Germany that had been
cut off from the rest of
the country)
This was because of the
“Polish Corridor” a path
cut through Germany
which gave Poland
access to the ocean
Poland denied Germany
access
Hitler invaded on Sept
1, 1939
England and France
finally step in and
declare war against
Germany

Germany expands by:
Invading the Rhineland (1935)
Invading the Saar Region (1935)
Unifies with Austria (Anschluss 1938)
Invades Czechoslovakia (1938)
Invades Poland in 1939 (the beginning of
the WWII)
Was Hitler a Genius or was he at
the right place at the right time?
The following Countries practiced
totalitarianism in the 1930’s: Germany, Italy,
Russia, and Britain
These are some of the important articles of
the Treaty of Versailles:
Germany would pay $32,000,000,000 in
reparations
Germany’s military is destroyed (no Aircraft,
reduced Navy, 100,000 man army)
Germany lost all colonies
Germany lost almost 20% of its territory (to
France, Poland and others)
Hyperinflation means that people have more
money and that prices will go down
The Appeasement is when you do not give in
