Definition of Bias
• Bias: (noun) a prejudice or strong opinion
about something [slanted view]
• To be biased: influencing others with your
opinions
•
Can be intentional (on purpose) or
unintentional (not on purpose, not aware of)
• Everyone is biased at some time
Neutral
• to be impartial and not express one’s
opinions
Author’s purpose:
•To inform
•However, some authors are not
aware that they are being biased
with the information they are
presenting.
Intentional
• Author’s purpose:
•To argue/persuade: to purposefully
influence or express one’s opinions
•omit facts or important information
•Manipulate readers using word choice
•use past experiences (info is too old and
no longer applies)
•Propaganda
•Using only one source, or one type of
source (only pros, only cons etc)
Unintentional
• unaware of own feelings and that he
or she is influencing others (try to
inform but doesn’t reach neutrality)
• might not have all the facts, ignorance
• Using only one source, or one type of
source (only pros, only cons etc)
•omit facts or important information
because they didn’t know them.
Steps to Identify Bias
• analyze the argument (What is the author’s Central
Idea?)
• look for:
•Loaded words (connotation- positive or
negative)
•1st person pronouns (I, Me, My, We, Us, Our)
•Personal Opinions (pro and con?)
•Unsound reasoning or holes in the argument
(Are there unanswered questions or missing
information? Does the reasoning connect the
evidence back to the central idea?)
