Reaction to Nazi Government
Lesson starter:
Why did so many Germans fear the
Nazis?
Today we will…
• Evaluate how people
viewed Hitler’s
government
• Identify which aspects
of the Nazi government
people liked.
Why didn’t people stand up to
the Nazis?
• This is a common
question and the answer
is – people did!
• We will learn later
about opposition groups.
• However it has to be
said that many Germans
supported what the
Nazis were doing to
rebuild Germany.

• Military parades and rallies
made Germans feel proud and
patriotic
• Pro- Nazi films filled the
cinemas
• Slogans – ‘One People! One
Reich! One Führer!’ made
many Germans feel united for
the first time since 1918.
• Cheap Nazi radios were
easily available and gave a lot
of Nazi propaganda.
• All work stopped if the
Führer was giving a
broadcast
• Big parades like this one made many Germans
feel strong and united again.
• Many people who were not part of a
race or group who were persecuted
actually approved of Hitler’s regime
• Why?

• Large scale building projects took place, such as the
Autobahn or motorway which gave many men jobs.
• The army was expanded conscription reintroduced, so
unemployment fell and Germany was now strong again.
• Due to forcing ‘undesirables’ like Jews out of jobs,
unemployment fell dramatically
• Unemployment fell from - 6 million in 1932
- to 1 million by 1938
• Cheap holidays were introduced in the ‘strength
through joy’ programme for hard working and loyal
Germans.

• You must write out a short
statement about why you like
the Nazi government – include
as many reasons as you can
• Remember – even if you don’t
you have to lie about liking
them!
• Your teacher may want to
record your statements to
produce a propaganda
