The DBQ exam question is divided into four sections:
Section 1 Comprehension (HL 20 marks; OL 40 marks)
Students are required to extract relevant data from
documents to answer questions that are designed to test their
understanding of a passage or their interpretation of a visual
source. Write short, to-the-point answers.
Section 2 Comparison (HL & OL 20 marks)
Students are required to compare two or more accounts of
the same historical experience and to note similarities and
contrasts. Write a paragraph, supported by quotes.
Section 3 Criticism (HL & OL 20 marks)
Students are required to recognise bias and propaganda; to
note viewpoint; to identify contradictions; to make
judgements about the reliability of various sources. Write a
paragraph, supported by quotes.
Section 4 Contextualisation (HL 40 marks; OL 20 marks)
Students are required to place the subject matter of the
documents in their historical context; to show
understanding of issues and events associated with that
period as outlined in the elements of the topic.
HL: Write four paragraphs, around 1½-2 pages max.
OL: Write four of five relevant points, around ½ -1 page.
