Throughout the years, society’s beauty standards have changed. Back in the 90s women were
considered beautiful if they were thick and curvy. For instance, large size women symbolized wealth,
and beauty. Nowadays, being large is considered “fat” and the image of beauty is skinny, tall and
refines women. What’s beauty? Beauty is the art of being yourself, is portraying
a unique image. However, society has used the meaning of beauty as a
marketing
strategy,
setting
up
demands
that
are
impossible
to
meet.
Who doesn’t want to be a
victoria’s secret model? Most
people underestimate the
power of media, and allow
themselves to be influenced by
it. I considered that more than
60% of the television images
display beauty as young, skinny,
tall, blonde, tan and rich girls.
These standards also affect
middle age women, given that
they are constantly fighting
against
aging.
Likewise,
numerous products promise to
help you meet the “society’s
beauty standards,” persuading
you to spend your money to
achieve superficiality; making
you doubt yourself and your
natural beauty, telling you that
you
are
“NOT
PRETTY
ENOUGH.”
It is okay to be you, no matter if you are not 5 feet
or skinny, you are beautiful. It is also part of the
life cycle to get old, aging shouldn’t be seen as a
disease that make wrinkles appear on your face
and turn your hair white. It is beautiful to grow
up, and to grow old, whatsoever. The image that
society reflects of beauty is propaganda.
Women’s should not starve themselves with
diets, dye their hair because its white, put
makeup to look like Candice Swanepoel or go
throw surgery to be a size two only because
society wants; no one will ever meet society’s
beauty standards because it is constantly
changing. YOU GOT TO LOVE YOURSELF!
