LT 5 Judaism
LT 5: Our last learning target!
• LT 5: I can identify and describe how Judaism influenced
beliefs, customs, and cultures around the world. How does Judaism
affect people’s lives (clothing, food, holidays, etc.)?
• One of the biggest influences Judaism has had on the world is that
this religion introduced the idea of : ___________________. (beliefs)
– This was the first ancient religion to believe in just one God.
• Both Christianity and Islam have its roots in Judaism.
– This means all three religions are related, and Judaism influenced both
Christianity and Islam. (cultures)
• Jewish people have their own set of customs, like religious practices,
holidays, even dress that influence people around the world today.
We learned a lot about these in the video we watched in class.
– Holidays affect peoples lives due to the customs observed on those
holidays. Some important Jewish holidays are: Rosh Hashanah, Yom
Kippur, ________________, and Chanukah
– However, not all Jewish people practice Judaism in the same way,
different families may have different customs or traditions.
Jewish Holidays
Rosh Hashanah
– During the fall
– The Jewish New Year
– festive meals with foods symbolizing hopes for the new
year—such as apples dipped in honey for a sweet new
year and pomegranates for a year of plenty
– a day spent in prayer or quiet meditation.
Yom Kippur
– The most solemn day of the Jewish year
– The Jewish Day of Atonement offers an entire day
devoted to self–examination.
– Many spend the day in synagogue devoted to prayer and
study while not eating or drinking.
– The goal is to begin the New Year with a clean slate.

Seven or eight day festival of freedom
Remembers the Hebrew exodus from Egypt long ago.
The story is told during a festive ritual meal called a “Seder.”
During the holiday, it is traditional to not eat any foods
containing leaven(no yeast)
– Matzah, an unleavened bread that is baked before it has a
chance to rise is one of the few “grains” Jewish people will eat
during this time.
Hanukkah
– 8–day Jewish winter festival celebrates the miracle of a small
amount of oil when it burned for 8 days, instead of only one.
– It also celebrates the military victory of the Jewish Maccabees
over the powerful Syrian Greek army in 167 BCE.
– Lighting of the menorah, or Hanukiah for 8 nights
– Dreidel is played as a game during this holiday.
