Most important belief of Judaism: monotheism.
Monotheism was rare at time when Judaism was created.
According to the Jewish tradition, the God took special care
for the Hebrew.
Says God rescued people from slavery in Egypt.
Revealed Ten Commandments to Moses.
Gave more religious and ethical guidelines in Torah.
Torah is the name of the law that Moses made.
Most of guidelines accented ritual purity.
Guideline also accented importance of remaining set apart from
surrounding polytheistic cultures.
Both Abraham religions.
Fundamentally diverge in theology and practice though.

Omer- Jewish boy + Liyana’s friend
Omer & Liyana’s friendship - problem because they are different
religions that oppose each other
Liyana finds this relationship uncomfortable, but Omer doesn’t
Omer says: ““Ha! Would I suggest we get together- if it bothered me? The
question is – does it bother you?””
Liyana asks her father if he ever had Jewish friends to check if Jewish
friends are OK.
Liyana worried that other Palestinians will not like her if she is
friends with a Jew
Later, Sitti’s house is damaged greatly by Jewish soldiers
Also, Liyana’s father, Poppy, had been arrested by the Jewish soldiers
for trying to stop what they were doing
Khaled was shot in the leg by the Jewish Soldiers
After these incidents, Liyana feels more guilty being friends with Omer
Still Liyana didn’t stop meeting Omer
Poppy doesn’t feel comfortable with Omer being Jew
So Omer come and talk to Poppy, Sitti
Realize shouldn’t hate one person because hate whole group
Realize Individuals are different

Sitti told Omer: he would find “walls” that couldn’t be broken
Sitti told Omer: he would need to “find doors” within “walls”
“’There are hard days coming’…” and “’…hard words are waiting to be spoken…”
Omer would “need to be brave”
Sitti said to Omer they were finding “doors” to “walls” already
“’…harsh words waiting to be spoken…’”: meant there would be “harsh words
waiting to be spoken” between the Arabs and Jews
Omer couldn’t break the “walls” that he would find: Omer couldn’t solve the
Palestinian conflict by using violence (breaking the “wall”)
Omer would have to “find doors in them [the walls]” instead, she probably
meant that he would have to find peaceful ways (in this case, “doors”) to
solve the Arab’s and Jew’s conflict(s)
Omer will face “walls” that will not be easy to find “doors” to because it is
very hard to find a peaceful way of solving a problem if you’re in a situation
like the Arabs and the Jews are in
Very difficult to make peace to come between the Arabs and the Jews
Both the Jews and Arabs want similar things
15. In the chapter “Map”, what does Liyanna mean when she
writes “There is no map,” and “Every day is a new map. But it’s
just a scrap of it, an inch.”
Why does she want a map? What kind of map? To find what?
•
Liyanna wants a map that says, “Here is the country of the little, where
words will fall out of your mouths. Here are roads leading in every
direction. Some people will travel many roads while some may not. Some
will set up their first homes, while some will stop loving their early
words. Nothing will be enough for them. Keep your hearts simple and
smooth and you will live long.”
•
The map was meant to say that the country that it showed was beautiful.
Many people had come and stayed, while some came and went. Time goes on,
and nobody can stay forever, keep moving and your heart will live long.
•
Along with time the map will also grow, little by little everyday, but
it is still growing. The ever changing world will never stop, even if it
moves inch by inch.
•
Liyanna means that the world is changing, with or without you, and she
is adding on to the map too, with everyone else on earth.
