The Amazing Gold Rush
By Olivia and Jessica
So what is the Gold Rush?
In January 24,1848 James Marshall found gold in
John Sutter’s Mill. James Marshall was
checking the canal when he spotted
something shiny. The shiny rocks were in the
water behind the mill’s wheel. After he
scooped it up with his hat, he found a
hammer and hitted the shiny rocks ,but it
didn’t break. So he knew it was gold , then he
took it to John Sutter, who has declared it was
gold.
The news is spreading out!
When James Marshall a carpenter who worked
for John Sutter found gold, John Sutter tried to
keep the news quiet about the gold found in
his land, but Sam Brannan a news paper man
made sure the news of gold spread far and
wide. Sam Brannan was going to open a new
store that was selling picks, shovels, and pans.
Later on the news spreaded slowly and the
first few people were all going crazy about the
gold. They are riding ships and carriages trying
to get to California as fast as they can. James
Polk confirmed in 1848 that the gold rush has
truly began! !
What do we have to bring?
Tools and Things we need are :
• Craddle/rocker
• Long tom
• Pan
• Shovel
• Pix-axe
• Food/fruits and vegetables

What do we wear or pack?
If you want to go to the Gold Rush, you
must wear two shirts, because in the
morning it could be hot and in the
afternoon it could be cold. You could bring
a hat with you. Also if people wants they
could bring small container to put inside the
gold. People who want to go to the Gold
Rush has to bring a lots of foods and
water,because miners get tired easily.
How to get there?
The best way to get to San Francisco is by sea,
you can travel around South America’s Cape
Horn or the via Panama. The Cape Horn will
take you seven months and you will meet
storms, overcrowding and boredom. The
Panama route is faster but more expensive.
Travelers have to pay extra to cross the
narrow neck of land between North and South
America.
Dangers of both land and sea
If you want to get to the gold rush fast you have
to think of which way is better and faster to go
there. There might be dangers like sea
monsters, getting sick, not enough food but,
that rarely happens. On land it is more
dangerous because there might be bandits
that attack you, maybe the Native Americans
might not let you in there place and the
carriages are not as comfortable as boat.
There might be floods and rain on land as well.
Fun Facts!!
Here are some fun facts about the Gold Rush
and San Francisco :

common in summer months.
California was a part of Mexico until 1848.

Lots of people who worked for other people
left there owners to go to the gold rush.
In San Francisco the harbor is packed with
ships and 30 buildings are built everyday.
