GD
- Listed as separate chapter
– Classification as sexual disorder was controversial
– Sex vs. gender
• Biological vs. personal identification
– Different criteria for children and
adolescents/adults
– Distress that accompanies the incongruence
between sex and gender
• Emphasis on distress, not cross-sex identification
GD in Children
• Incongruence between sex and gender for at
least 6 months duration in 6 of the following
areas:
– Strong desire to be other gender
– Strong desire to dress as the other gender
– Strong preference for games, toys, activities
stereotypically used and engaged in by the other
gender
GD in Children
- strong preference for cross-gender roles in
make-believe play
- Strong preference for playmates of other
gender
- Strong dislike of sexual anatomy
- Strong rejection of toys, games, activities
associated with assigned sex
- Strong desire for sex characteristics to match
gender
GD in Adolescents and Adults
• Incongruence between sex and gender for at
least 6 months in at least two of the following:
– Incongruence between gender and primary and
secondary sex characteristics
– Strong desire to be rid of primary/secondary sex
characteristics
– Strong desire for sex characteristics of other
gender
GD in Adolescents and Adults
• Strong desire to be other gender
• Strong desire to be treated as other gender
• Strong belief that one has typical feelings and
reactions of other gender
Other
• Onset of symptoms usually between 2 -4 years
of age
– Not a stage
• High comorbidity
– Anxiety, depression
