Definition of PTSD
• An anxiety disorder characterized by haunting memories
nightmares social withdrawal jumpy anxiety and or insomnia that
lingers for four week or more often a traumatic experiences.
-This disorder comes from memories that people feel
they have been hunted by, this can often become a disorder that
makes the person feel deviant, distressful, dysfunctional
Associated features of PTSD
• The people that have this disorder they feel like that they are going
through their experiences again even though their not.
-They have dreams; flashbacks
-Intense fear helplessness; horror
-Difficulties to sleep
-Depression
-Startled by minor noises
• Symptoms
-Stress
-Anxiety
-Relatively normal functioning within days or week
-Diagnosed If symptoms are persist for a month

• A: Stressor
Question about their experiences and what event made them get stress
Ex: The person has experienced, witnessed or been confronted with an
event that involved actual or threatened to the physical integrity of oneself
or others

In what way does the traumatic event is re-experience, dreams flashback;
seeing images that remind you of the event that traumatized the person

Etiology
• The cause of this disorder is a horrible experience that they went
through. They begin to feel stressed and cant continue with their
normal life.
• The main reasons that people get this disorder is being through a
bad an traumatic experience
ex: rape, threatened, victim of torture, witness and accident,
exposure to a war, or other form of abuse
Prevalence
• This disorder occurs to 8% of the U.S population
• Veterans of the Iraq war are usually diagnosed with PTSD
• 3.6%of adult American can develop PTSD
• PTSD can be developed at any age
• PTSD is more likely to develop PTSD then men
maybe because women are more likely to go through
domestic violence, abuse, and rape.
Treatment
• To treat PTSD their therapy and medication that can be used
-medication used are
antidepressants: Doxepin, Elavil
tranquilizers: Ativan
mood stabilizers: Depakote,
-Therapy (psychotherapy)
helps the person learn how to manage the disorder
• Cognitive behavioral therapy
• To help recognize and change their thoughts pattern that led to trouble
the persons emotions

Helps the person examine personal values, and emotional traumatic caused by the
event
-group therapy
May help the person express their fear and thoughts with people with who
experienced the same traumatic event
Prognosis
• An out come that can happen in some situations is being in
denial/intrusion phase, this can complicate the disorder a bit more
because the person will not accept what they went through and will
be harder to get them recover from what happen to them.
• They recovery of PTSD takes a long time and is an on going
process. The person will continue taking medication and going to
therapy.
Discussion Question
• Do we find the treatment used for this disorder effective, if we
didn’t what other ways we can treat it?
