What Are Mental Disorders?
A mental disorder is an illness that affects a
person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
A symptom is a change that a person notices in his
or her body or mind and that is caused by a disease
or disorder.
Mental Disorders Are Often Misunderstood
Most mental disorders are treatable.
9.5% of Americans suffer from depression.
20% of children suffer from a mental disorder.
54 million of Americans have a mental disorder.

Depression: sadness and hopelessness that
keep a person from carrying out everyday
activities. Symptoms include:
Lack of energy
Withdrawal from people
Loss of appetite or overeating
Too much or too little sleep
Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed
disorder of childhood. A person who has
ADHD is frequently inattentive or
impulsively hyperactive to the point that
he or she has problems accomplishing daily
activities.

Anxiety Disorders: when anxiety gets in the way of taking part in daily
activities
Panic disorder: feeling extreme fear for one’s life even though the person is
not really in danger.
Phobias: excessive or persistent fear of something that may or may not cause
real danger.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder: uncomfortable thoughts called obsessions
and by repetitive behaviors called compulsions.
Post-traumatic stress disorder: anxiety over a past traumatic event.
Hypochondria: belief of illness when none is present.
Bipolar disorder: uncontrollable cycles of extreme happiness and then
depression.
Schizophrenia: false perception of reality/hallucination and/or delusions.
