The 12 Muscle Regions 十二经筋
•
Stems from the 12 channels.
•
Distribute Qi of the 12 channels to the muscles, tendons and
joints, nourish and govern muscles and joints.
•
Connect with bones, ease flexing and extending of the joints
•
Reinforce the relationship of the 3 Yin and 3 Yang channels
on the same side.

The 12 Cutaneous Regions 十二皮部
•
The regions where the 12 channels distribute on the skin.
•
The sites where QI of the collaterals spreads.
•
Governs closure and opening, responsible for the
association of the body with the environment

The 8 Extra Ordinary Channels 奇经八脉
•
Distribute among the 12 channels.
•
Connect and regulate Qi and Blood in the 12 channels.
•
Strengthen the relationships among the 12 channels.
•
In close relation with the extraordinary “Fu” organs
•
Do not have their own distributing routes, runs among
the 12 channels except GV and CV
•
Do not have their own specific acupoints except GV
and CV

The 15 Main Collaterals 十五络脉
•
Stemmed from the connecting points of the 12 channels,
GV, CV and Spleen Major.
(Out of their own channel to connect with their
internally-externally paired channel).
•
Reinforce the connection of the channels with internal and
external relationship on the 4 limbs.
•
Reinforce the association of the anterior, posterior and
lateral part of the body.

What are Channels? What are their basic physiological
functions?
•
routes that transport Qi and Blood.
•
regulate Yin and Yang.
•
connect the Zang-visceras 脏 with the Fu-organs 腑 and
coordinates their functions.
•
associate the external with the internal, upper and lower.

to run superiorly between the Foot Taiyin and Shaoyin
channels.

The convergent principle of the 12 channels
•
The Yin and Yang channels in external and
internal relationship converge over the end of
the four limbs.
•
The Yin and Yin channels converge over the
chest.
•
The Yang channels of the same name converge
over the head and face.

The concept of Gen, Jie of channels
It' refers to the originating and terminating points of Qi in
the 12 channels.
•
Gen 根 means (root) or starting, it refers to the Jing-Well
point of the channels.
•
Jie 结 means (tip) or gathering and is located on the head,
chest and abdomen.
It emphasized that the points located in the limbs have
important implications in the therapeutic effect on the
head, chest and abdomen.

The concept of Biao, Ben of channels
It’s explains the relations between the channel
system and the various organs of the body.
•
Biao 标 means (branch), it refers the upper part of the body
(head/face/trunk/back)
Ben 本 means (foundation) the lower part of the body such
as extremities
System covered is wider then Gen / Jie

•
Refers to the common pathway which channel Qi
circulates.
•

The concept of Four Seas 四海
Refers to
•
Brain (head), Sea of marrow (脑,头为髓海)
•
Tanzhong (chest), Sea of Qi (胸,檀中为气海)
•
Stomach (abdomen), Sea of grain and water
(胃,上腹为水谷之海)

Clinical Applications of
the Channel Theories
Copy right: Physician Colin Chan SRN,CCRN
Clinical application of the theory of the channels
经络学说在临床上的应用
A. Guidance in clinical diagnosis 用于诊断
1. Disorders of the Zang or Fu will reflect symptoms and
signs along the course of the channel (eg. Headaches)
2. Diagnosis can also be established according to the
reactive changes along the course of the channel, (eg
tenderness and soreness sensations over the radial
margin of the medical aspect of the forearm)

B. Guidance in clinical treatment 用于治疗
1. Based on the principal “diseases can be cured when the
affected channels or the affected Zang/Fu organs are
cleared ” . Therefore the selection of acupoints along the
course of the affected channel is the basic principal (循经
取穴)
2. Eg: 肚腹三里留, 腰背委中求,头项寻列缺,头脸合谷收
3. Channel entry of herbs.

Principles of Acupuncture 针的立法
1. Two methods to establish the principle…..
•
Select acupoints according to the location of the disease.
•
Set the principle as according to the nature of the disease.
i.
Deficiency: Tonify.
ii.
Excess: Disperse.

iii. Stasis of blood: Prick to release.
iv. Febrile disease: Swift-needling method (to dispel heat).
v.
Diseases of Cold symptoms: Retain needle.
vi. Prolapsed (Yang exhaustion): Moxibustion.
vii. Even reinforcing and reducing.
