Early Life-Childhood

Born to Ukrainian Jewish parents
Jennie and Sam Bernstein. His
grandmother insister on naming him Louis but
his parents always called him Leonard which
they preferred. When his grandmother died, he
legally changed his name to Leonard when he
was sixteen. To his friends he was known as
"Lenny".
 He attended Garrison Grammar School and
Boston Latin school. He graduated in 1935 then
attended Harvard University studying music.

Early Life- Involvement in
Theatre
He was close with his sister, who would
play operas on the piano to him.
 Father took him to orchestra concerts.
 Bernstein got a piano from his cousin and
studied it.

Influences on Musical Career
Dimitri Mitropoulos was a famous conducter that
Bernstein met and became one of his major
influences. He admired him for his power and
carisma.
 He was also influenced by his Jewish heritage.
 Leonard Bernstein studied music theory with
Arthur Tillman Merritt and counterpoint with
Walter Piston at Harvard University.


Impacts on the Theatre
World
Composers like John Adams from
the 1970’s onwards indirectly adopted
elements of his eclectic, theatrical style.
All his major pieces have been performed and
discussed since his death.
 During his many years of teaching at
Tanglewood and elsewhere, he directly taught or
mentored many conductors who are performing
now.
 He also influenced the career choices of many
American musicians who grew up watching his
television programs in the 1950s and 60s.

Miscellaneous Fun Facts
Inspired by his Jewish heritage
 Did the score for the movie “On the Waterfront”
 In 1978 the Israel Philharmonic sponsored a festival
commemorating his years of dedication to Israel.
 His father didn’t approve of his musical ambitions at
first.
 Conducted “Berlin Celebration Concerts” on each
side of the Berlin Wall as it was being dismantled.
 Between 1943 and 1990 Bernstein
appeared at Carnegie Hall more
than 430 times

