Important Historical Events
- Theatre banned under the rule of the Puritan
leaders for 18 years. When Charles II was
restored to the throne on May 29, 1660 (thus the
term Restoration), theatre was then made legal.
- The English Royal Patent of 1662 – major tool of
restoring theater. Endorsed the theater as “useful
and instructive”.
- Between 1808-1809, the Drury Lane and the
Convent Garden burned to the ground,
symbolizing the end of the era.

-Around 1780-1800
-Males: big coats with loose sleeves, long or short curly wigs,
big hats, tights with high heeled shoes, long pants with
boots.
-Females: big dresses with loose sleeves, hoods on their
heads, they wore dresses that reveals their chest, wore
neckerchiefs, and wore hats diagonally.
Theater House / Stage Area
-Small theatres popped up, but only the
Dury Lane and the Convent Garden
received official sanction, refers to the
generally accepted.
-Audience sat on level floors, stage was
tilted slightly toward them to help
them see the actors.
-Roofs were close in, allowing for more
elaborate scenery. Stage was lit with
more elaboarte chandeliers. Orchestra
moved to front of the stage.
