Class discussion - How can one person make a positive difference the
world?
ACTIVITY 1:
What is the heading of our article/text? What is the subheading?
We will read pages 3-7 together and answer questions as we go.
ACTIVITY 3:
Written assessment for students, answer the Reflecting questions on page 7.
What issue in this selection did you make the strongest connection to? Why?
Which type of connections were most helpful to you while reading this article?
Which issue have you heard most of in the news?
What sort of viewpoint is most often connected with that issue?
ACTIVITY 4:
Write out sentences with the words affect and effect. High light both words.
How are these words alike? (spelling/pronunciations)
Note the differences, Affect is a verb, effect is a noun, affect means change, effect means the
outcome
Write ‘Words Often Confused’ List the following:
affect/effect, advice/advise, accept/except, lose/loose, global/globule, emigrate/immigrate,
formally/formerly
Use dictionaries to find the parts of speech and meanings of each set of words.
Ask: Why are these word pairs not considered homophones(words that sounds the same)?
Ask: Why do writers need to know parts of speech?
ACTIVITY 5:
Create a blog entry describing your actions as a global citizen. Create a draft first.
