An Overview of the Phonics
Phases
Phase 1: Environmental sound recognition, listening and oral work
Phase 2: Introduction of each individual phoneme (sound), blending and
segmenting these sounds, tricky words (ones that don’t follow a phonetic
pattern, e.g. was and said), high frequency words
Phase 3: Blending and segmenting sets of graphemes – reading and writing,
higher level tricky words and high frequency words
Phase 4: Consolidation of sounds, adjacent consonants (jump) & poly-syllabic
words (lunchbox). tricky words, high frequency words
Phase 5: Introduction of additional phonemes (digraphs, trigraphs) and
alternative spellings.
Phase 6: suffixes and prefixes, morphology, root words etc

The Phonics Screening
Check
• In June, children will be assessed for their phonics
knowledge
• Statutory screening to highlight where children may be
finding decoding a challenge
• This is not a reading test and is very child friendly.
• If your child does not reach the expected standard, they
will have additional support during Year 2 and re-take the
test in Year 2.

• Focus on spelling patterns and rules, prefixes, suffixes:
singular to plural – bus (es) cherry (ies) pot (s)
• Past tense: -ed, -ing E.g. Stop – stopping
Skip – skipped
Laugh – laughing
Jump – jumped, and root words
• Contractions
• Revision of alternative graphemes
• Decoding harder words
• We investigate grammar rules and use LOTS of different
strategies to help spelling
Overall Aim:
To provide a really strong basis from
which to build spelling knowledge and
understanding of spelling rules.
