Effective Internet Searching
• Goal: Identify key word strategies that will give
you the best results
• Vocab
– Keywords: most important words related to a
topic you search for in a search engine
– Precise: Clear and exact
– Synonyms: words with the same or similar
meaning
– Alternative: a different way
Effective Internet Searching
• Search using key words, not sentences or
questions.
Good: stonehenge history
Poor: I want to know more about the history of
stonehenge
Stick with KEYWORDS (informational) words, not
CONNECTOR words!
Effective Internet Searching
• If you have two key words that you'd like to
find together, place quotation marks around
them.
Example: “black holes”
Effective Internet Searching
• to eliminate words from your search results,
type the minus (-) sign and the word you don't
want to appear in the results.
• For example, when searching the topic, Holy
Grail, you might consider eliminating Jay-Z and
Justine Timberlake's names from the results so
you don't get hits for their song of the same
name.
"holy grail" -Jay-Z -Justin -Timberlake
Effective Internet Searching
• If you want to include certain words in your
search, type the plus (+) sign and the word
you want to include. For example, adding the
word mystery to your search could yield more
relevant results.
“easter island” + history
