Thank you for coming
Read Write Inc. Phonics
Programme
 Read Write Inc. is an engaging synthetic
phonics programme that ensures early
success in reading, writing and spelling.
 Synthetic phonics is simply converting a
letter or group of letters into their shortest
possible sounds that are then blended
together into a word. E.g m-a-n = man
How does the programme
work?
 The programme teaches children the 44 sounds in English
through fun, fast-paced lessons and how to sound-blend
them into words.
 The programme comes with appealing sets of letters
cards, freezes and posters which link in to each letter as it
is taught.
 The children work alongside ‘Fred’ a frog who can only say
the sounds of words, he cannot blend them together. The
children help Fred to say his words. Children are
encouraged, when reading and writing to use ‘Fred talk’ or
‘Fred fingers’ to sound out words into their sounds. ‘Fred
fingers’ is where the children use their fingers to help them
sound out a word.
How does it work cont.
 Once the children have learnt the 44 sounds, they
begin to read ‘Ditties’ which allow them to practise and
apply the 44 sounds into short sentences.
 The children then move on to the story books which
are grouped into stages and colours.
 The children read twice a week in small groups with
children who are a similar ability. In these reading
sessions the children work closely with a partner where
they take it is turns to be the ‘teacher’ and the ‘pupil’.
 Partner work is a key element in this programme and
allows the children to have the opportunity to talk
before answering a question, practise taking turns and
allows them to develop a wide spoken vocabulary for
writing.
Green Words and Red
Words
 As part of the programme the children are introduced
to ‘Green’ words. These are words that can be
sounded out easily using ‘Fred talk’.
 The other type of words they learn are ‘Red’ or ‘Grotty’
words. These are words that cannot be sounded out,
and have to be learnt.
 These ‘Green’ and ‘Red’ words are a focus in the story
books and the ‘Red’ words are written in red so that
they stand out for the children.
 The ‘Red’ words have been written onto sheets and are
intended to be taken home for the children to practise.
You should have all received the first one. We suggest
that the children also write these words out to practise
the spelling.
How do we say the pure
sounds?
 The following exercise will show you how
to say each letter or group of letters
correctly. It is very important that the
shortest sound is said to make it easier
for reading, writing and spelling.
