A statement is a group of words that tells a complete thought.
A question is a sentence that asks something.
Reading: Visualizing (Strategy) and Key Details (Skill)
Key details are details that give important information about
characters, setting, and plot.
Visualizing is forming pictures in your mind to better understand
the text.
Spelling: short a and short i words (pat, pig)
Vocabulary words: actions, afraid, depends, nervously,

Grammar: Subject
The subject of a sentence tells who or what the sentence is about.
Ex: The class went to a party. (who/what went to a party: the class.
Reading: Ask/Answer Questions (Strategy) Key Details (Skill)
Fiction (Genre)
Key details are details that give important information about
characters, setting, and plot.
Ask/Answer Questions: ask questions such as who, what where,
when, why, and how to help you understand the story
Context Clues - if you are not sure what a word means, use the
others words in the sentence to help you figure out its meaning.
Ex: Sahara and Kaylen gazed at the stars last night.
Think about what you would do to stars, that help you know gaze
means look.

The predicate of a sentence tells what the subject of the sentence is
doing.
Ex: The class went to a party. (what does the class do?)
Reading: Ask/Answer Questions (Strategy) Key Details/Using
Illustrations (Skill) Narrative Nonfiction (Genre)
Key details are details that give important information about
characters, setting, and plot.
Ask/Answer Questions: ask questions such as who, what where,
when, why, and how to help you understand the story
Narrative Fiction: is about real people, things, or events. It is told by
a narrator and can have photos and captions
Root Words- are words to which other word parts are added to
change the meaning of the word.
move means “place to the side”
moved means “placed to the side” - root word is move
moving means “placing to the side” - root word is move

Grammar: Expanding and Combining sentences
When you expand a sentence you add more details. When you
combine sentences, you put two sentences together to make one
sentence.
Reading: Ask/Answer Questions (Strategy) Key Details/Using
Illustrations (Skill) Informational Text(Genre)
Key details are important pieces of information in a text.
Ask/Answer Questions: ask questions such as who, what where,
when, why, and how to help you understand the story
Expository Text: gives facts and information about a topic. It can
have text features.
Possessive Nouns- show who or what owns or has something. We
add an (‘s) to make a noun possessive.
Ex: The student’s homework was on the reading skills they were
working on.

A noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing
Ex: The boy walks in the desert. His mother sits on a rock.
Reading: Make Predictions (Strategy) Character, Setting, Plot
(Skill) Realistic Fiction (Genre)
Plot: is the events in the story that happen in the beginning, middle,
and end of the story
Make Predictions: use what you already know and what you read in
the story to help you predict, or guess, what might happen next
Realistic Fiction: is a MADE-UP STORY that could happen in real
life and has characters that could be real people BUT IT IS STILL
FICTION
Prefixes- are word parts at the BEGINNING of a word. You can
separate a prefix from its root word.
Ex: unhappy---prefix: un root word: happy

A singular noun names ONE person, place, or thing.
A plural noun names MORE THAN ONE person, place, or thing. We
add (s) or (es) to the end of the noun to make it plural.

Fable(Genre)
Problem: is found in the beginning or middle of the story. It is what
is wrong in the story
Solution: is how the problem gets solved. Usually found at the end
of the story

-When the subject is singular you must use HAS.
-When the subject is plural you must use HAVE.

Main Idea: the main idea is the most important point an author
makes about a topic.

-You can combine two simple sentences by using a comma and a
word such as and, but, or and so.
Ex: We get some paint. We make a mural. --- We get some paint,
and we make a mural.

Reading: Reread (Strategy) Compare/Contrast (Skill)
Compare/Contrast: to compare is to tell how things are ALIKE
To contrast is to tell how things are DIFFERENT
Reread: If you come across words or explanations you do not know,
reread them to make sure you understand.
Author’s Purpose: an author write to PERSUADE, INFORM, or
ENTERTAIN
Compound words: A compound word is made up of two smaller
words. You can put together the meanings of each smaller word to
help you learn the meaning of the compound word.
Ex: snowfall - means snow that falls to the ground.

Reading: Reread (Strategy) Cause/Effect (Skill)
Cause/Effect: a cause is an event or action that MAKES something
happen. An effect is what happens because of that event.
Ex: Waves wash sand away (cause). There is no beach left (effect).
Reread: If you come across words or explanations you do not know,
reread them to make sure you understand.

Grammar: Irregular Verbs-we usually add -ed to form the past
tense of many verbs. The verbs go and do have special forms in the
past tense. They are called irregular verbs.
Ex. People go to a parade. (present-tense) People went to a parade
(past-tense)
Reading: Visualize (Strategy) Compare/Contrast(Skill) Realistic
Fiction (Genre)
Compare/Contrast: to compare is to tell how things are ALIKE
To contrast is to tell how things are DIFFERENT
Visualize: When you visualize, you use the author’s words to form
pictures in your mind about a story. Visualizing the characters,
setting, and events can help you better understand the story.
Similes-A simile uses the words like OR as to compare two different
things.
Ex: A plane is huge and travels over the ocean like a whale in the sky.
-The author is using a simile to compare the large size of the plane
to the size of a whale.

We are learning:
Grammar: Irregular Verbs-we usually add -ed to form the past
tense of many verbs. The verbs go and do have special forms in the
past tense. They are called irregular verbs.
Ex. People come to a parade. (present-tense) People came to a
parade (past-tense)
Reading: Visualize (Strategy) Theme (Skill) Drama(Genre)
Theme: The theme of a story is the main message the author wants
to tell the reader. To find the theme, think about what the characters
say and do.
Visualize: When you visualize, you use the author’s words to form
pictures in your mind about a story. Visualizing the characters,
setting, and events can help you better understand the story.
Root Words- are words to which other word parts are added to
change the meaning of the word.
move means “place to the side”
moved means “placed to the side” - root word is move
moving means “placing to the side” - root word is move

We are learning:
Grammar: Contractions-A contraction is a way to combine two
words into a shorter word. An apostrophe is used in place of the
missing letter or letters.
EX: is not = isn’t
have not = haven’t
we will = we’ll
Reading: Repetition (Strategy) Theme (Skill) Poem (Genre)
Theme: The theme of a story is the main message the author wants
to tell the reader. To find the theme, think about what the characters
say and do.
Repetition: is the use of repeated words and phrases. Poets use
repetition to make a poem sound like a song or to stress the poem’s
meaning.
Similes-A simile uses the words like OR as to compare two different
things.
Ex: A plane is huge and travels over the ocean like a whale in the sky.
-The author is using a simile to compare the large size of the plane
to the size of a whale.

We are learning:
Grammar: Pronouns - A pronoun is a word that takes the place of
one or more nouns.
Ex: Miss Miller is the mayor. She is good at her job.
-She is a pronoun that takes the place of Miss Miller.
Reading: Summarizing (Strategy) Point of View (Skill)
Realistic Fiction (Genre)
Point of View: a character telling the story has his OWN feelings
about the events. This is the character’s point of view. The words I,
my, me and mine tell who is speaking.
Summarizing: is when you tell only the MOST IMPORTANT events
of the story in YOUR OWN WORDS.
Suffixes-are word parts at the END of a word to change its meaning.
You can separate a suffix from its root word.
Ex: harmful---root word: harm
suffix: ful
Meaning: full of harm

Grammar: Reflexive Pronouns – when you use a pronoun in the
predicate that describes an action you do for or by yourself, you add
–self to my to make myself, or add –selves to our to make ourselves.
Ex: I hurt myself.

Biography (Genre)
Sequence: tells the order of ideas in a selection. We can use the
words first, next, then and last to tell the order of what happens.
Summarizing: is when you tell only the MOST IMPORTANT events

Biography: is the TRUE story about a real person’s life. It is written
by another person.

Grammar: Contractions and Possessive Pronouns – a
contraction is shortened form of two words. An apostrophe shows
where one or more letters have been left out. Some contractions are
formed by joining a pronoun and a verb.

Problem & Solution: the plot is often about the problem in the story.
The solution is how the characters solve the problem by the end of
the story.
Predictions: is when you use what you already know and what you
read in the story to predict what might happen next.
Homophones: are words the SOUND THE SAME, but have
DEFFERENT SPELLINGS AND MEANINGS.
Ex: I see a bird flying in the sky.

Grammar: Pronouns/Verb Agreement - a present-tense action
verb must agree with the pronoun in the sentence. We add -s to
most action verbs in the present tense with the singular pronouns he,
she, and it.
Ex: She makes rules. He follows rules. It keeps us safe.
Reading: Make Predictions (Strategy) Cause & Effect (Skill)
Expository Text (Genre)
Cause and Effect: a cause in an event that makes something
happen. An effect is what happens because of that event.
Predictions: is when you use what you already know and what you
read in the story to predict what might happen next.
Multiple-Meaning Words- are words that have more than one
meaning. Use the other words in the sentence to figure out which
meaning is being used.
-add means “to put on something extra” or “to put numbers
together”. They add on to their nests. In this sentence add means
“to put on something extra”

to tell the reader. To find the theme, think about what the characters
say and do.
Reread: If you come across words or explanations you do not know,
reread them to make sure you understand.
Context Clues - if you are not sure what a word means, use the
others words in the sentence to help you figure out its meaning.
Ex: Sahara and Kaylen gazed at the stars last night.
Think about what you would do to stars, that help you know gaze
means look.

articles. A is used before a singular noun that begins with a

vowel. The is used before singular and plural nouns.

missing.

Text (Genre)
Author’s Purpose: Author’s write to answer, explain, or describe.
As you read, look for clues to the author’s purpose.
