Suggestion for use in a beginning Adult ESOL classroom.
•Create a Pre and Post test in which the student draws a line matching the word to the picture.
•Have students copy the word from the first 12 slides.
•Have students listen and repeat. The teacher first says the word very slowly
then says it with a natural speed and intonation the second time.
•Use the PowerPoint to quiz the students.
•Load the PowerPoint on a student tablet or PC.
•Give students a handout of the first 12 slides. Have students number them.
•Ask the students “What’s number 3, 5, 6, etc. Students also do this in pairs.
• Create a hand out of just the pictures. Students number them and write the words
under the picture. The teacher may give them a word bank.
•Create a missing letter worksheet or use the board to do it.
•Have students alphabetize the words.
•Call on individual students to erase one of the 12 words from the board.
•Do a spelling test of the words.
•Ask students to use the word in a sentence.
•Ask the students short questions i.e. “What do you buy in bunches, heads, pounds, etc.
•Pass out to each student a picture or a word. They have to find their match by asking
“ Do you have..?”
•Create a concentration card activity. Group students into 5 to 6 students per group.
•Students make a shopping list of as many items as they can remember.
•Practice ordinal numbers with blow up picture cards of the items. Put 6 items up and ask
What’s first, second ,third etc.
•Use a TPR grid that has lettered squares. Ask the student to place the item on letter B, C etc.
