What is a diamante poem?
Diamante is Italian for diamond.
A diamante poem is written
in the shape of a diamond.
TIP: Diamante poems are a great way to
study complex subjects.

7 lines
At least 16 words

Each line uses a specific type of word
(such as an adjective or –ing word)
An adjective is a word that describes
(smart, pretty, thin, smelly, strong)
It can be about one topic or two
What is the format?
Each of the 7 lines has a specific number of words
Line 1: 1 word
Line 2: 2 words
Line 3: 3 words (adjectives ending in –ing)
Line 4: 4 words or short phrase
Line 5: 3 words (adjectives ending in –ing)
Line 6: 2 words
Line 7: 1word
What is the format?
Note about Line 4
(with 4 words or a short phrase)
Line 4 links the top part of the poem
with the bottom part

Other Poetic Devices
Alliteration: Words beginning with same sound
Example: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers
Simile: Comparing two unlike things using like or as
Example: Justin is as strong as a bull.
Metaphor: Calling something it is not to suggest a resemblance
Example: Justin is a bull.
TIP: These are the types of figurative language
needed to get a 6 on FCAT. Use them!
Three Assignments
Use a dictionary and a thesaurus to complete.
Poem 1: Name of character
Choose a character from the Hutchinson family
(Davey, Nancy, Bill, Tessie, Eva, Bill, Jr.)
Poem must have at least 16 words
Lines 1 & 7 must be synonyms (similar)
Lines 3 & 5 must have 3 adjectives ending in –ing
Line 4 must link Lines 1 & 7
Three Assignments
Use a dictionary and a thesaurus to complete.
Poem 2: The Lottery
Write about the story
Poem must have at least 16 words
Lines 1 & 7 must be antonyms (opposite)
Lines 3 & 5 must have 3 adjectives ending in –ing
Line 4 must include a metaphor
Line 4 must link Lines 1 & 7
