Diamante Poetry
• Diamante poems derive their name from the
Italian word for diamond.
• They are diamond-shaped poems with 7 lines.
• They do not have to rhyme.
• A diamante poem uses specific types of words
such as gerunds (-ing), adjectives, and nouns.
• It can be about one topic, but most commonly, it
contains two opposite topics.
Prewriting
• Start by brainstorming a topic and
then think of the opposite.
• Place the topics in your graphic
organizer.
• Then fill up the organizer using
adjectives, gerunds and nouns that
are all synonyms of the two topics.

Practice Activity for
Drafting
• Take the words brainstormed during prewriting as
a class, and decide whether or not the poem will
be a comparison poem or contrasting poem.
• After this decision, choose the actual words to
use in the poem.
• Follow the prompts in the graphic organizer to
know which parts of speech go where and how
many of each need to be chosen.
• Fill in the chart appropriately.
Assessment Activity for
Drafting
• Independently fill out the graphic
organizer with individual topics for
everyone in the class.
• Follow the prompts on the graphic
organizer appropriately to create a
comparison or contrasting diamante
poem.
