Text Structure:
• Text Structure is the way an author organizes
nonfiction text.
• Cause and effect is on kind of text structure.
• A cause is an action or event that makes
something else happen. An effect is what
happens as a result.
• Clue words can help readers identify the
organization of the text. Some clue words are:
because, if, then, so that, when, and as a result.
Practice
• Look on page 293 to find the cause-and-effect
clue word that appears twice in the
paragraph.
• What causes the pebble plant to escape
enemies?
• It looks like stones scattered on the desert
floor.
